Biography

Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri (1974/ Greece) is a composer and sound artist based in Zurich Switzerland and Ithaca, NY. She is known internationally for her elegant and innovative performative sound compositions and constructions employing few means. Since 2016, Papalexandri is an Assistant Professor of Composition at the Department of Music of Cornell University, in Ithaca New York. Papalexandri has exhibited at venues include the Martin-Gropious-Bau, Berlin; Asmolean Museum, Oxford; Museum of Musical Instruments Berlin; ISEA, Hong Kong; San Francisco Art Institute; ZKM, Karlsruhe; Biennale del Disegno di Rimini, Italy; Transmediale, Berlin; Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland, Donaueschingen Festival /Art Plus Museum and Venice Biennale of Architecture. Commissioned by Neue Vocalsolisten, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble SurPlus, Ensemble Mosaik, Yarn /Wire and featured in festivals such as MaerzMusik, Berlin; Japan Media Art; the ISCM World Music Days; Ultraschall, Berlin; ECLAT Stuttgart; MATA New York and Archipel Geneva among other. The recipient of the Ernst Von Siemens Foundation Commission, the Berlin Sound Art Grant, the Swedish Arts Council Grant, the IMPULS Composition Award, the Dan David Prize for Contemporary Music, the Darmstadt Stipendienpreis and the Berlin Composition Grant. Papalexandri has been nominated for residencies by the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, the Electronic Music Studios, Sweden, the Villa Concordia, Germany the Humboldt-University of Berlin, the Instrument Inventors Institution and the St John's College, University of Oxford.
