Die frappante Ähnlichkeit des Klarinettenklanges im ppp-Bereich und des mittels Stimmgabeln (die am Knopfe mit Scotchband behandelt, und damit gedämpft sind) auf dem Korpus der Streichinstrumente erzeugten Tones, bildet den Ausgangspunkt dieser Komposition. Der Ton -a’- durchzieht praktisch das ganze Werk. Er wird dauernd umgefärbt, sehr oft aus dem ppp-Bereich heraus (Flöte, Streicherflageolette, Klavierresonanz, Glockentöne, gestrichenes Vibra- und Marimbaphon). Kurze, trockene Klänge, sowie Arabesken-artige, rasche Passagen wirken als Kontrastfläche zum Ton -a’-, der dadurch eine grosse Raumwirkung erhält. Er funktioniert als „point de repère“, als Bindeglied zwischen den verschiedenen Elementen des Stücks und stellt so das „Rückgrat“ der Komposition dar.
In search of... The idea of A LA RECHERCHE came from my son Olivier. As a child, he „composed“ pieces for our family. In one of his pieces, he sounded a tuning fork against his cello. I was struck by the similarity of the sound thus produced to the sonority of my instrument, the clarinet. Thus, this piece is based on a A, a „milestone“ which appears throughout almost the entire piece. Repeated by all the instruments, favouring delicate nuances (marimba struck by fingers in tremolo, for one), it becomes a point of departure and a trait of union, an „Orient“ allowing the audience to take its bearings in space and time.
