Studies with Cristóbal Halffter, Edison Denisov and Dimitri Terzakis.
Masterclasses in Lucerne with Klaus Huber and Heinz Holliger.
Seminaries in Paris with Pierre Boulez. Intense cooperation with Siegfried Palm.
J-L. Darbellay was awarded by the Communauté des Radios publiques de langue française, he had comissions and was performed in Festivals like Présences of Radio France,
Wien modern, MDR-Sommer Leipzig, Zagreb Biennale, Prague premieres, Moscow Alternativa and Autumn Festival, Aspekte Salzburg, Lucerne Festival (Requiem) and several ISCM Festivals. Concerts worldwide.
1992 collaboration with John Cage during his last European Festival in Perugia and world premiere of Lebenslauf by György Kurtág as a bassethornplayer in Witten.
Jean-Luc Darbellay was president and founder of the Swiss ISCM Section (1995-2007) and board member of the ISCM (2003-2007). He organized the WNMD 2004 in Switzerland.
In 2006 he was honoured by the French State as “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres”. Composer in residence 2011/12 with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne (in this frame premiere of Cosmos for percussion and orchestra with the soloist Evelyn Glennie, conducted by Pascal Rophé) and 2012 with the festival Sommets musicaux Gstaad. Premiere of Eco 2013 in Brno for alphorn and orchestra (during the swiss spring festival) with Radek Baborák, 2014 five concerts in Tokyo Goethe-Institut (150 years cultural exchanges between Switzerland and Japan) and first performance of Trittico for 3 different horns and orchestra in the Zurich opera house with Olivier Darbellay as soloist. 2015 world premiere of Once upon a time for alphorn and strings with O.Darbellay in Zurich Tonhalle. 2016 the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande premiered Anges-l’univers mystérieux de Paul Klee conducted by Hartmut Haenchen.
