- Description
"sieben sonnengesichter." is an approximately 90-minute work by the Austrian composer Klaus Lang, which connects - or dissolves - time and space in a special way. It consists of seven parts lasting about 9 to 18 minutes, which - as the composer writes - "start from an always constant elementary tonal basic structure, namely the scale of the white keys (and their shadow, the black keys)." Just as one can look at a visual object from different angles, and the lengths of the object's shadows change its visual impression depending on the time of day, Lang presents the tonal material in the piece from different "listening angles" or, precisely: with different shadows: "Different temporal distortions of the same sound result in analogy to the spatial distortion of light. "
The seven parts of the piece, which can be played in different orders, have an almost installative character due to their wide-ranging, quiet and introverted sound processes. And indeed, performances are also conceivable as a live sound installation - in a room with natural light that changes constantly throughout the day, in barely registerable movement.
The Swiss label domizil breaks new ground with this release of a composition for an acoustic instrument. After its founding in 1996, domizil quickly established itself as one of the leading labels for experimental forms of electronic music, and to this day domizil appears in particular as a presentation and production platform for electronic music and field recording. Apart from such categorizations, domizil also stands for an aesthetic that moves between minimalism, algorithmic composition, noise and soundscapes. Klaus Lang's "sieben sonnengesichter." fit into this and at the same time reach beyond it: its textures, as dense as they are fragile, are at times reminiscent of electronic music's sonority without the compositional construction taking a back seat; the conceptual approach to a given sound material goes hand in hand with the concretising and evanescent moment of interpretation. At the beginning of "sieben sonnengesichter." there is an elementary interest in the instrument and in a music that exposes it as a sounding body - an interest, or rather an ability, that distinguishes both the composer and the interpreter.
