Phoebe Bognár (1997*) is an Australian-born performer, flutist, and composer based in
Basel, Switzerland.
Known for their creative vibrancy and fluidity, Phoebe embraces a wide spectrum of artistic
avenues and entities throughout their projects and practice. They investigate corporeality and the
relationship between the self, the instrument, place, and each other, applying various flutes,
instrument preparations and alterations, voice, objects, environments, and their own body.
As a performer, Phoebe has presented projects in various locations and contexts worldwide.
They have worked with numerous ensembles, including Ensemble Modern, Ensemble
Recherche, and Klangforum Wien. Since 2024, they have been a member of Ensemble
Aventure. Collaboration is at the core of their creative practice, and they work closely with
creatives of various disciplines on works that reflect upon corporeality, identity, memory, ecology,
and society.
As a composer, Phoebe experiments with notation, employing graphic scores, aural scores and
personalized click tracks, site-specific compositions, and installations. Their works have been
performed by various artists at events and venues such as the Center for New Music (USA),
Theater Basel, BuchBasel Festival (shortlisted for the SONX Prize) (CH). They are a recipient of
the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund 2025.
Phoebe holds a Master's of Contemporary Music from the Hochschule für Musik Basel, a
Bachelor of Music (Performance) from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, and
was a member of the International Ensemble Modern Akademie (2022-23) in Frankfurt. In 2025,
they were awarded second prize (ex aequo) in the Concours Nicati Interpretation Solo
category. They were awarded the 2024 Fritz Gerber Prize of the Lucerne Festival and have
received scholarships and awards from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, the Hirschmann Stipendium,
and the Australia Council for the Arts, among others.
Through art, Phoebe seeks to create new connections and understandings – with each other
and for the world we live in.
