The idea for a double viola concerto came from George Benjamin, Composer-in-Residence at the Festival Présence in Paris 2020. Five Stages of a Sculpture was commissioned by Radio France for a concert in combination with Viola, Viola by George Benjamin at the Maison de la Radio Paris.

The composition is closely linked to a series of five stone sculptures. The sculptures represent the process of becoming a form in five stages. When you look at a form, it does not usually reveal its process of creation. Music, on the other hand, unfolds its formal structure in a certain time. The sculptures visualize the transformation process from the naturally broken rough stone to the final form. Each movement of the work is dedicated to one of the states of the sculptures.
