This audiovisual piece is a reflection on the cycles of learning and re-learning. During the life of a musician, unlearning is sometimes a very important step for moving forward and improving at the instrument. As a metaphoric counterpart in life, we are a collection of memories and experiences and many times we have to dig deep into the subconscious to find and clean some dark corners in order to grow and evolve as individuals.
You Had To Rename Everything is based on the text ‘Memory’ by Angela Blumberg. The music is mapped after the rhythm and voice inflections of the poem’s text. By using extended techniques, video-editing techniques, subtitles and by playing with the extremes of the flute, my goal is to blur the perceived boundaries between the instrument and the spoken text.
