Born in 1992, Nuño Fernández Ezquerra is a composer of contemporary classical music, electronic music and music for film.
Refusing aesthetic and conceptual shallowness, his works are characterised by a fastidious attention to detail and the quest to create a meaningful and impactful experience to the audience. With a critically open listening, his musical language has integrated radical elements from other genres such as advanced kinds of electronic music, jazz, metal, post-rock or Japanese nō, influencing his aesthetics in a veiled, coherent and cohesive way. His pieces usually have strong poetic character, pushing the boundaries of instrumental techniques and timbre exploration. He merges this approach to instrumental writing with a sound conception born from his work in the electronic music domain.
His work has been awarded several prizes internationally: being the winner of the National Composition Contest of the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra, Duo Signal Call for Scores and Commission, Juurilla Commissioning Grant, International Call for Scores & Commission 2017 of the ensemble Suono Giallo and ilSUONO Contemporary Music Week, and receiving the 3rd prize in the contest “Jóvenes Compositores 2014” of the SGAE/CNDM Foundation and an honorable mention in the 3rd Construct Radiate Composition Competition 2020, amongst other recognitions.
His pieces have been programmed in numerous festivals internationally, amongst which stand out: season of the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra the Klang! Concert Series, UNM Festival, the 7th Contemporary Music Concert Series of the BBVA Foundation, Festival MIXTUR, OUT.SIDE 2016 Concert Series and other venues. His working partners include: Castile and León Symphony Orchestra, The Arditti Quartet, Uusinta Ensemble, Duo Signal, Francesco Palmieri, Saxtronauts, Zagros Ensemble, CrossingLines, Ensemble Suono Giallo, Ensemble Temporum, the Black Page Orchestra, amongst other chamber groups, orchestras and soloists.
Nuño holds a master’s degree in composition from the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki and a bachelor’s degree in composition from the ESMUC (Barcelona), studying under the guidance of Mauricio Sotelo, Agustí Charles and Lauri Kilpiö.
