Grafeneck 1940 I composed for the commemoration of the 10654 mentally and physically handicapped people, who were murdered by the Nazi regime, in the first gas chamber at Castle Grafeneck in Germany in 1940. The entire concert (with music by Helmut Lipsky and me) pays homage to these victims. Grafeneck 1940 is the last piece, reflecting the journey of a single person, leaving the mental institution on those grey buses (electric violin), travelling to the castle, their arrival and their death. The tempo in sixty is marked at the end with a metronome. Each beat stands for a victim and it would last about 3 hours to illustrate the amount of 10654!
